Why Do We Call Jesus' Worst Day Good Friday?
What Sense Does It Make to Call the Dark Event of Jesus’ Death as Good Friday?
A friend of mine asked an odd question the other day. He said,
"This had to be Jesus" worst day. After all, it ended with him getting crucified and dying on a cross. How does this become a Good Friday? It certainly didn't seem very "good" for Him."
Ever thought why do we call Good Friday “good,” when it’s such a dark event marking the suffering and death of Jesus?
As I was pondering the question, I recalled an interesting article written by Justin Holcomb that clearly answers the question.
So, let’s dive in...
Good Friday Was the Turning Point for All Creation
In his article, Justin describes that when Jesus shed his blood it served as the decisive turning point for all creation.
The day itself was the most momentous day in the history of the world.
In 1 Corinthians 15:3, Paul mentioned this day to be “of first importance.”
“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance that Christ died for our sins…”
Since Jesus offered himself as a sacrifice for all mankind, we can claim victory over our sins.
Still the question remains, why do we call the day of Jesus’ death “Good Friday” instead of “Bad Friday” or something similar?
Justin further says that although the origin of the term “Good” is debated, the name is entirely appropriate since God planned this day to save the souls of His people from the bondage of sins. Jesus’ death and the Cross have rendered us the gift of salvation.
So, I ask you, when you receive a gift from God, aren’t you joyful?
Would you consider a day of receiving a gift “Good” or “Bad?”
“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” 1 Peter 2:24
Without the day of Jesus’ death, we wouldn’t have been able to celebrate the joy of His resurrection.
Ready to Call the Day Jesus’ Died “Good Friday” Without Hesitation?
The death of Jesus has bought for us the gift of an eternal life.
Although the day Jesus got crucified was sorrowful but it was a divine moment for us to be blessed with the biggest gift from God i.e. the blood of Jesus that has the power to wipe away all our sins.
That’s why understanding the Word of God is so much important. Since what we find bad is good in the eyes of God Almighty.
